Rusty Spinner Dry Fly Pattern
The Rusty Spinner is a widely used dry fly pattern that imitates the spent or dead adult stage of various mayfly species as they lay eggs and die on the surface of the water
. This pattern is highly effective because it mimics the natural appearance of spent mayflies, which are an easy and attractive meal for trout.
Appearance and characteristics
  • Color: The defining characteristic is the rusty brown color of the body, which imitates the natural appearance of many spent mayflies. However, the pattern can also be tied in other colors to match different mayfly species, such as pale yellow, pale olive, or black.
  • Sizes: The Rusty Spinner can be tied in various sizes, typically ranging from size 12 to 18, and even larger for specific situations or smaller for tiny hatches.
  • Tail: Usually composed of two or three microfiber strands, often separated and splayed to mimic the natural posture of a dead mayfly on the water.
  • Body: Often created using goose biots, which are wrapped around the hook shank to create a segmented and tapered body. For smaller sizes, thread can also be used.
  • Wings: Typically made of white polypropylene yarn or similar synthetic materials to provide flotation and realistic appearance. The wings are usually positioned horizontally and tied in with figure-eight wraps.
  • Thorax: Formed with dubbing, such as rusty brown super fine dubbing, built up behind the wings to create a realistic shape.
